Learned the hard way that you can't use old ingredients to brew beer. Ten gallons of homebrew down the drain. Well... lesson learned I guess. On to the next batch, which I have decided on and purchased the grains for. All-grain Orange Whit here I come!

  1. What do you mean by old ingredients? I'm curious.

  2. Well... I got them from a friend who stopped brewing several years ago. He wasn't sure how old they were, but I am guessing in the vicinity of ten years. Both extracts and specialty grains.

  3. Well, I nicknamed it old soapy. :P
I actually made two separate five gallon batches. One was supposed to be a sort of dark belgian style ale, and the other was an oatmeal stout. The first one tasted very heavily of soap, it also had a very stale flavor. I saved four bottles, so if you are ever in the area you can feel free to try it, but don't say i didn't warn you. The oatmeal stout actually had a nice smoky stout flavor with some sour notes, kind of like what you can taste in guinness. But the good flavor was overshadowed by the stale soapy flavor. I saved a six pack of that. I want to see what happens after they sit in the bottle for a couple months, not really expecting a miracle just curious.
